CTC Graduate Get Smokin Wins Seek Again
Get Smokin wins Grade 3 Race at Tampa Bay Downs
Prior to entering the $100,000 Seek Again 4+ years race, Get Smokin trainer Tom Bush predicted the Kentucky thoroughbred would “benefit from a more compact schedule between starts”. Get Smokin proved Bush’s theory to be correct by getting into a rhythm early and holding off Flavius to win the race by three-quarters of a length.
In February, Get Smokin won the Grade 3 Tampa Bay going 1 1/16 miles on the Tampa Bay Downs turf, and placed eighth several months later after a two-month break in the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile on April 9. Bush commented that a better demonstration of his ability would take place after wheeling back in just five or six weeks. The schedule adjustment could be credited with his second win, in three starts, of his four-year-old campaign.
Get Smokin broke sharply under jockey Junior Alvardo to lead the field through the first quarter-mile in 24.25 seconds and the half in a slow 48.61 over the firm turf. Get Smokin was able to maintain his lead as Flavius tried to stretch out. He was able to hold his advantage for a win in 1:33.96.
Jockey Alvardo said, “He’s very quick. If anyone else wants the lead, they have to work very hard. He broke sharp today again, which makes my job easy. I just had to nurse him along. Turning for home, I knew I had plenty of horse left and he gave me that nice kick that he has . . . You can never get too excited until you cross the wire first, but I was very happy with the pace I was going with him”.
